The shape of summer

When it comes to finding essential items for your summer wardrobe flowing dresses and skirts might immediately come to mind – but don’t overlook the slouchy wide leg trouser.

The perfect trouser shape for the summer months ahead has to be a loose flowing wide leg trouser – it ticks the boxes. Its billowy shape means it will be cool and looks effortlessly stylish when worn with simple basics such as a cotton tee and flat sandals or dressed up with heels or wedges.

If you opt for a wide leg trouser the key is to choose a pair in a fabric that will move with you. Avoid stiff fabrics, ideally choose linens, crepes, silks or fine cottons.

Wear them as a versatile alternative to a maxi skirt or dress. The wide leg style will elongate your legs to create a flattering look so don’t be afraid to wear them even if you aren’t quite so tall. If so, try pairing with wedges or heels and a slightly shorter boxy shaped top. Aim for definition between your top and trousers. If worn with a tee, try tucking it in and add a belt at the waist of the trousers. Vertical stripes will also help to elongate your legs.

I’ve picked out a few of what I think are the most versatile and stylish pairs around at the moment. Each style could be dressed up or down depending on the occasion.
