Frills, ruffles, broderie anglaise, stripes … what’s not to love!

If there was ever a collection to fall head over in heels in love with it has to be SEA NEW YORK (a New York based womenswear collection by designers Monica Paolini and Sean Monahan) .

This is a range that encapsulates feminity and elegance. Blouses and dresses are turned into timeless classics by adornements with ruffles, frills, embroidery, eyelet detailing and broderie anglaise. Beautifully detailed pieces are mixed with relaxed easy-to-wear styles to create a most sought after collection.

I’m quite sure that I’m not alone in lusting after their Blue stripe broderie anglaise ruffle blouse, and it became even more desirable after seeing it worn by the beautiful Mary Seng @happilygrey (if you don’t already follow her on Instagram you need to!!).

Their ruffle blouse is one of those pieces that you won’t forget about, you’ll wish you owned it,  but … there is always a but … it’s not cheap! At £375 it is hard to justify (unless you have a limitless budget for your wardrobe). When it comes to buying things for our wardrobes we all need to be realistic.

As with many of the designer pieces I see (and fall in love with) I wait, search the high street for styles to trickle down and hope that something very similar appears… and in this case it did!

Say hello to the River Island ‘Blue stripe frill broderie blouse’. It has the same fine blue and white pinstripe, similar ruffles, broderie angliase detailing and flared cuffs but with a far more affordable price tag of £35.

Perfect for Spring with it’s long length sleeves, this is a versatile piece for your wardrobe. I spend most of my weeks (and weekends) in jeans and this top works beautifully with them. The pale blue stripe compliments most shades of denim and also looks great with cream or white jeans. For those of you that need a formal work wear look this is a great alternative to a pinstripe button shirt; it looks equally as smart but adds a more stylish approach to your outfit.

River island are not the only retailer to have embraced the broderie and ruffle frill influence.Whether it be striped fabrics or white cottons embellished with embroidery, eyelet detailing and ruffles there is plenty of choice … at very affordable prices!

  1. Thank you for this great post. I also love SEA – I hang out for the Net a Porter sales – but this top is a great alternative. Totally checking it out now and hope they ship to Australia 🙏
